Canin'97 - A five-man Polish team led by Marek Koziol explored the Canin massif (the Julian Alps) in October 1997. A cave labelled AV97?5, and thus called "Point 5" was discovered. The cave reached the depth of about -180 m and still continues. Polish discoveries in Schnee Maria-Hohle in '97 Italy

Marek Koziol Important discoveries in the Canin - The article presents Polish activity in the Mount Canin (the Julian Alps). The expeditions that carried out exploration in that massif between 1995 and spring of 1997 were described in the 7th issue of Jaskinie. In September 1997 a five-man team from KS "Aven" Sosnowiec led by Marek Koziol discovered the new cave labelled AV97.5 and because of that called "Point 5" (Kropka 5). The cave reached the depth of about -180 m and the length of about 880 m. The next Polish expedition came to the Mount Canin in February 1998. Marek Kozio,` was again the team leader. During the first trip to "Point 5" the cavers, reached the big chamber "Sala bez Stropu" (Roofless Chamber) in Complesso del Foran del Muss. During the same trip they linked "Point 5" with another big cave Abisso Carlo Seppenhofer. Thus, the total length of Complesso del Foran del Muss can be estimated as about 20 km. The depth of cave "Point 5" reached -292 m. It means that the vertical extent of Complesso grew to 804 m. It is worth mentioning that the system has as many as 22 entrances. Italy

Michal Gradzinski, Mariusz Szelerewicz Canyoning There are also canyons in Sardinia - The authors describe three canyons situated in the eastern pan of Sardinia (the Supramonte Mts.). Codula di Oribisi is the most diffcult among them. A boat can be used to go through it. The easiest one is Codula Fuili, going through it takes from 1 ,5 to 2 h. On the contrary the trip to Badde Pentumas takes 7 h. Italy,Sardinia

Jarosław Rogalski Three postcards from Mt Canin - The author describes impressions from his summer (July and Autumn break) expedition to the Mt Canin. A team of fifteen, led by Marek Kozioł explored in Complesso del Foran del Muss. Two new entrances to this system were discovered (23th and 24th). Moreover, a survey was done to locate entrances on the surface and a promising cave was discovered - Loch Kozicy - 110 m deep and 368 m long. Tatra mountains Cave no. 3 in the Nowy Wierch - Peter Magdolen Situated in the Nowy Wierch Jaskyna vo Vrchu Novy c. 3 (Belanske Tatry, Slovakia) has been known for very long time. In the past century it was mentioned in a paper by Samuel Roth. A survey of its main series was made in the fifties. Cavers from Bratislava and Plavecke Podhradie resurveyed the cave in fall 1995 and in summer 1999. They discovered several hundred metres of new galleries and four new entrances in another valley then the entrance hitherto known. The cave totals now 582 m in length and 53 m of vertical extent. Andrzej Poczobutt Long and wet weekend in Abisso Paolo Roversi - Polish cavers went to Abisso Paolo Roversi - the deepest cave in Italy. The team consisted of nine people led by Andrzej Poczobutt and Marcin Zamorski. They went down to about -800 m but the very high water level in the cave, caused by snow melting, prevented them from going to the cave bottom. Italy

Sardinia Cavers from AKG Kraków went to Sardinia. Two caves Grotta de su Guano and Tiscali, both situated in Lanaitto valley were visited. The team went also to Su Palu and Su Spiria caves located in Codula di Luna valley. The author evaluates the former one as the most interesting caves that he has visited ever. The next aim of the Poles was Cratero Vecchio - a 273 m deep pitch. Canyons Badde Pentumas, Codula Fuili, Codula Orbisi and Bacu Esone were passed through. Several climbing areas were visited as well. Italy,Sardinia

27-44 Citterio, M., Turri, S., Bini, A., Maggi, V., Pelfini, M., Pini, R., Ravazzi, C., Santilli, M., Stenni, B., & Udisti Multidisciplinary approach to the study of the Lo Lc 1650 “Abisso sul Margine dell’Alto Bregai” ice cave (Lecco, Italy). In 1999 we selected the LoLc 1650 “Abisso sul Margine dell’Alto Bregai” ice cave to be a test site for a large number of different studies dealing with both ice caves climatology and cave ice glaciology. To investigate the dynamics of the vegetation cover outside the cave we constructed a local 850 years long Larix decidua Miller growth curve. We recorded air temperatures both inside and outside the cave, and described the surface morphology and internal structure of the fossil, stratified, clear ice deposit found at a depth of -80 m below the cave entrance. On 5 cm-thick ice samples cut from a 1.20 m-long ice core we determined chemical composition, d18O and pollen content, and performed atmospheric dust counting. We also cut thick sections for the morphological description of fluid inclusion and thin sections for ice fabric observations and measurements of c-axis orientations. Most of the investigation is still ongoing and comparisons with the results from a new 4.6 m long ice core are being carried out. In the present paper we summarize the results obtained thus far, and show that the integration of data coming from different disciplines is the fundamental step in the study of ice caves and cave ice. We also briefly discuss some terminological issues about various classifications commonly found in literature. ice,Italy

45-50 Citterio, M., Turri, S., Bini, A., & Maggi, V. Observed trends in the chemical composition, d18O and crystal sizes vs. depth in the first ice core from the LoLc 1650 “Abisso sul Margine dell’Alto Bregai” ice cave (Lecco, Italy). A stratified clear ice deposit was drilled in an ice cave located at 2030 m a.s.l. in the Moncodeno area (Grigna Settentrionale, Lecco, Italy), and a 1.20 m-long ice core was recovered. Due to the topography of this cave the snowfalls cannot reach the ice deposit which is located at a depth of 80 metres below the cave entrance. Thin sections cut along the whole length of the core show significant textural evolution from equidimensional pluricentimetric at the top to columnar pluridecimetric crystals near the bottom of the thickest stratum. The samples from the ice core follow a well-defined general trend with depth both in the d18O values and ionic concentration (Na+, K+, NH4+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, SO42-, NO3–). We argue that the observed features are compatible with a “repeated freezing of shallow lakes” genetic model. The origin of the local deviations from the main trends observed at certain depths is discussed. ice,Italy
