Part I The Cigalere
Part II Exploring Underground Waters
  • I - Seneca is quoted, Descartes decried, Palissy praised for their ideas on hydrogeology
  • II Subterranean rivers - Padirac, Bramabiau, Montespan etc get namechecked
  • III Torrents and waterfalls - Martel at Gaping Ghyll, Casteret at Gouffre Martel, etc; flooding incidents (including 'Lewis Railton and W.H.Little were exploring a vast cavern in Somerset with the strange name of Ogof-y-Ffynnon-Ddu ... only freed by soldiers ..' (hmm!)
  • IV Diving into traps - La Fontaine de Vaucluse, St Georges (Padirac), Wookey, etc; de Joly, de Lavaur, Cousteau, etc
  • V - Radio-aesthesia (water-divining); water tracing with sawsdust, dyes, absinthe (all successful), painted corks with postcards rolled inside (unsuccessful), rotting carcases (successful but nauseous)

93-99 Ross, J.-H., Serefiddin, F., Hauns, M., & Smart, C.C. 24 h Tracer Tests on Diurnal Parameter Variability in a Subglacial Karst Conduit: Small River Valley, Canada. Repeated dye tracer tests were undertaken for two complete diurnal discharge cycles at Small River Glacier, British Columbia. The injection site is a well developed glacier moulin. Monitoring was done at a karst spring in a cave entrance 1530 m down valley. The spring is the major outlet of glacial meltwater and also drains karstified glacier forefields. High flow velocities and low dispersivities indicate a very well developed conduit flow system. Discharge and velocity show strong diurnal cycles and are controlled by the amount of meltwater. The relationship of increasing velocity with discharge is approximately linear. Dispersivity values do not show any significant variation under diurnal discharge cycles. These results show the importance of diurnal variation in a transient groundwater system. hydrology, ice,Canada

101-111 Vesper, D.J., Loop, C.M., & White, W.B. Contaminant transport in karst aquifers. Contaminants are easily injected into karst aquifers through sinking streams, sinkholes, or through open fractures and shafts in the carbonate rock. Transport of the contaminants through the aquifer is by a variety of mechanisms depending on the physical and chemical properties of the contaminant. Contaminants consist of (1) water soluble compounds, both organic and inorganic, (2) slightly soluble organic com-pounds, less dense than water (LNAPLs), (3) slightly soluble organic compounds, more dense than water (DNAPLs), (4) pathogens, (5) metals, and (6) trash. Water soluble compounds (e.g. nitrates, cyanides, carboxylic acids, phenols) move with the water. But rather than forming a plume spreading from the input point, the contaminated water forms linear stringers migrating down the conduit system toward the discharge point. LNAPLs (e.g. petroleum hydrocarbons) float on the water table and can migrate down the water table gradient to cave streams where they tend to pond behind obstructions. DNAPLs (e.g. chlorinated hydrocarbons), in contrast, sink to the bottom of the aquifer. In the conduit system, DNAPLs pond in low spots at the bottom of the conduit and infiltrate sediment piles. Transport of both LNAPL and DNAPL is dependent on storm flow which can force LNAPL through the system as plug flow and can move DNAPLs by mobilizing the sediment piles. Pathogens (viruses, bacteria, parasites) are transported through the karstic drainage system because of the absence of filtration and retain their activity for long distances. Metals (e.g. chromium, nickel, cadmium, mercury, and lead) tend to precipitate as hydroxides and carbonates in the neutral pH, carbonate rich water of the karst aquifer. Metal transport is mainly as particulates and as metal adsorbed onto small particulates such as clays and colloids. Metal transport is also episodic. Metals migrate down the flow path under flow conditions that take small particulates into suspension. Trash is carried into karst aquifers through sinkholes and sinking streams. It is, in effect, a form of clastic sediment, and can be carried deep into the conduit system where it can act as a source term for other contaminants leached from the trash. hydrology

47-55 Gracia-Sanchez, J. & Navarro-Gonzales, I. Study of hydraulics and hydrocarbon-pollution behavior of a karst aquifer in a tropical area: Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. The results of a field investigation on hydraulic and hydrocarbon-pollution behavior in an unconfined aquifer are presented. The study was performed in a site in the peninsula of Yucatan (Mexico), the main characteristics of which are: the presence of karst and the tropical weather (hurricane zone), with substantial variations of the unconfined aquifer level. Hydrocarbon-layer thickness varies over time. Water flows very easily in contrast with hydrocarbons which flow very slowly toward monitoring wells. This fact allows us to evaluate the remediation methods already employed, as well as to recommend new strategies. The aquifer’s upper layer (1.5 m) shows high contents of pollutants, but no drinking water intake was found there. However, 2 km away, where drinking water is extracted at a depth of 40 m, no trace of contaminant was found. hydrology,Mexico

The foremost expert on hydrological studies in South Wales, Bill Gascoine (1939-2012) made key contributions to our understanding of the hydrology across the limestones of South Wales. In particular, he solved a number of the hydrological mysteries of Llangattock Mountain, especially by determining a previously elusive subterranean route - linking Llangattwg Swallet to Pwll y Cwm - traced over a 48-hour period during November-December 1979. It was the groundwork laid by Bill's experiments that inspired the extension of Daren Cilau through to the first underground sighting of water from Llangattwg Swallet in 1985. In his interview, Bill tells us how from his upbringing in Staffordshire his interest in hydrology was stimulated at a young age. Later, an approach for assistance by the Welsh Water Authority as a result of the draught in 1976 enabled Bill to undertake a major dye-testing campaign, spanning the longest distances hitherto achieved. This recording was produced by Clive Gardener as part of 'Searching for the Secret River' - a film and associated book project, 'Exploring The Caves of Llangattock Mountain'.

Ray (Farmer) Stoyles (1945-2012), of the Bradford Pothole Club, remembers the four man, six month long caving expedition to Jamaica in 1965. The Karst Hydrology Expedition was the first major caving expedition to leave UK shores. During their time in Jamaica they explored 29 km of cave passage - much of it previously unknown, included the Quashies River Cave System documented in Mike Boon's book . Ray and Sid Perou also reminisce about the other three remarkable characters who were on the expedition - Mike Boon, Pete Livesey, and Trevor 'Tich' Morris. This interview was recorded at the 2009 Bradford Winch Meet.

Ray (Farmer) Stoyles (1945-2012), of the Bradford Pothole Club, describes the social scene in Horton and at Brackenbottom in the 1960s. He remembers the original overnight exploration of the Whitsun Series, and recounts tales of dye testing in Jamaica which disconcerted the locals. This interview was recorded at the 2009 Bradford Winch Meet.
